Edge-of-Field BMPs#

Many conservation practices that you might want to implement are most effective when done on the actual land being farmed. However, the water running off the field, and the soil that is being eroded from the field has to cross the edge of the field before it can get into the stream, pollute the environment, and cause issues with flooding. That means that at the edge of your field you have the opportunity put in place barriers and practices that mitigate these effects. All the practices listed here take up a little bit of space at the edge of all of your fields, but can make a huge difference in terms of the amount of water that flows off your field and the sediment and nutrients that flow into the environment.
